The 11/28/07 NYT Dining Section article on Bourbons was like a gauntlet thrown in my direction. Bad mouthing my beverage of choice is not something I take sitting down, and, just to prove how wrong these "effete, elite, upper West Side" reporters are we needed to have a tasting of our own! Our opinion certainly holds at least as much weight as that of some taste-bud impaired NY Times writers....

The proposed bourbon tasting: - let's erase our preconceived notions and conduct a scientifically controlled double blind taste test. Or we can just drink some bourbon and decide which we like best....
Either way this is an important issue which must be decided post haste.

TASTING RESULTS were not as clearly defined as one might have supposed. Only one tasted bourbon was rated undrinkably bad (Buffalo Trace) while the majority were considered smooth with varying flavor elements. Early in the event we declared the use of flowery adjectives (such as those typically heard during wine tastings) to be verboten; with severe penalties for violators. Bourbon by nature is a manly drink; no reason to funk it up with attibutes like "essence of asparagus."
Winner - seems Evan Williams Single Barrel bourbon garnered the most first place nods - a smooth tasty whiskey that I will enjoy again right now... please excuse me
